In the early 1960s, there were in Perth. By the mid-1970s there were nearly 200, according to Perth’s Chung Wah Association, thanks to a wave of Chinese restaurateurs who flew in from Sydney and Melbourne to capitalise on the mining boom. Something similar is happening in Bali today. Last year, 15 million tourists visited, and with the National Development Planning Agency predicting the tourism destination’s GDP will surpass a record $33 billion this year, restaurateurs are flying in from all over the world to cash in on the tourism boom and see who can build the most glamorous and over-the-top restaurant on the island.
